Our customers ask us these questions a lot: what’s the difference between matte and gloss vinyl banners? And which material is better?
While there are some differences to these types of materials, one material is not better than the other. Rather, it comes down to personal preference depending on the look you’re going for and, most importantly, how and when you’re going to use the banner.
To put it simply, matte banners have a smooth, elegant finish, while gloss banners, just as the name implies, have a glossy, “shiny” look to them. Graphics look great on both types of material, but there are some specific situations when you might need to choose one material over the other.
Trade Show Events: Matte Banners Win
Let’s say you’re getting ready for a trade show event or conference and you want your logo printed on a banner as a backdrop for your booth. In this type of situation, your booth is likely to be indoors under bright lights. Anytime you have harsh lighting, matte banners will allow your company to stand out without producing a glare on your graphics. And if someone approaches your booth to snap a picture of it, you won’t have to worry about the flash of a camera preventing your logo or company name from showing up well in a photograph. Gloss banners, on the other hand, could produce an unsightly glare that detracts from your brand’s appearance. In this scenario, we recommend matte banners.
Photobooth Backdrops: Matte Banners Win
Photography brings up the next point about which material to use: if you want to use a banner as a photobooth or event backdrop for people to take pictures in front of, you need to select a matte banner. A matte banner will allow the focus of a photograph to be on the individuals instead of on a harsh glare. Your graphics will still “pop”––just without the sheen. For this reason, we only offer our backdrop and step and repeat banners in a matte finish.
Outdoor Advertising: Gloss Banners Win
Effective outdoor advertising requires bright graphics and bold displays to catch the short attention span of people driving or walking by your company. After all, you only have a few seconds to grab their attention, so make it count.
With outdoor advertising, gloss banners tend to be more effective. Our gloss material has just enough shine to make your graphics stand out and catch the public’s eye––all without appearing overly glossy.
So, which one is right for you? Well, it depends! If you need your banner for an indoor event, choose matte. It’ll give your brand an elegant, clean look, which is perfect for photo ops. If you need to advertise outdoors, choose gloss. The hint of shine will give your graphics just enough “pop” to draw foot traffic to your business.
